My Journey from Nonprofit to Personal Branding

For nearly 20 years, I had the pleasure of working in the nonprofit world, leading a team of digital marketers and online fundraisers at Ducks Unlimited, the world's largest wetland conservation organization. During that time, my team grew our social media to 2 million followers and raised over $40 million online. Seeing how digital strategies could ignite engagement and support for crucial causes sparked my passion for innovative marketing.

Building My Personal Brand

In 2018, I decided to try something new—I wanted to see if I could build my own personal brand on LinkedIn. I didn’t have a clear strategy, but I started posting, connecting, and sharing what I knew. I let my personality come through, whether that meant cracking jokes about the workplace or experimenting with different content styles. And guess what? People noticed. My posts started taking off, and my network grew to 37,000 followers, bringing in 9 million views to my content.

The Turning Point

Then the pandemic hit, and suddenly, people were reaching out for help with their LinkedIn profiles. They saw me as an expert because I was always active and authentic in my content. I realized that the same strategies I used at Ducks Unlimited could work for individuals too.

By 2021, I had more leads than I could handle—all without any cold outreach. I was getting invited to podcasts, speaking gigs, and consulting opportunities—all because of the presence I’d built on LinkedIn. It felt like the right time to take the leap, so I launched my own consulting agency.
